This time of year is difficult for a wide swath of people: as daylight wanes and longer nights roll in, the cold weather and dreary days approach. Many of us are susceptible to these changes and just want to burrow under the covers and wait for the sun to shine again--but really the best remedy is movement and human interaction. These two
things have proven again and again to help keep health and mental wellness at the forefront.
Additionally, for many people, the holiday season can be the most stressful portion of the year. As stressors with family as well as work (or lack thereof) impress difficulties outside our control and, often, reopen old wounds and past struggles. Yet, with a little forethought we can
turn the challenges into opportunities. There are a variety of activities to turn fears and anxieties into happy (or at least manageable) situations. Movement is a key component in letting go of stress and welcoming in a calm, mindful state of mind.
Gratitude is another element that, when folded into our daily existence and mindful practice, can enhance mood and change perspective. Being grateful and mindful can bring a lot of joy to difficult situations and help us find perspective. These are small steps along the road to happiness and stability and perhaps you can find some addition
support in the books I recommend below.
Speaking of gratitude: I was fortunate to be interviewed by both WFLD-TV and WBBM Radio about the gifts bestowed upon me by each marathon I have completed and how experiences like running a marathon can shape you and change you in so many ways.
I am grateful for all of you who have come on this journey with me. I hope this newsletter brings you something you can use or that you can share with a loved one. Thank you.
